I'm glad it's a new year. 2008 wasn't all that great, since my great Aunt Bea died. I've had lots of people I cared about die, but if I'd had to make a list of people I loved most in the world, she would've been right after my mom and sister. It was really difficult and happened in October, so it definitely affected my holiday season. Things weren't as joyful and great as usual, I had none of my normal happy Christmasy feelings, and Christmas day where we went to her husband's house was downright depressing.

Unrelated, but equally bizarre. [Nov. 27th, 2007|10:12 am]

I cut my tongue on a candy cane last night, and then I had dreams of Sweet Valley.

recently . . . . [Nov. 8th, 2007|10:34 am]
[mood | happy]

+ I love that it gets dark early now, and I'm loving this cold front. Slept with my windows open last night, Lurch (one of my cats) curling up on my feet.

+ Dawn and Steve got married; in fact, they actually eloped, not telling a single person beforehand.

+ Started studying for the GRE. The math is kicking my butt, of course.

+ Flo's new boyfriend is growing on me, and I'm happy she's so happy.

+ Started a new quilt. I'll give it to my mom when I'm finished. I wanted to be done by Christmas, but I'm so slow at sewing, so it will most likely have to wait until her birthday (the end of April).

So, basically, all is well.

I LOVE J.K. Rowling!!! [Jul. 26th, 2007|03:14 pm]
[mood | chipper]

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was just about perfect! I don't really see any other way she could have ended it, and I'm very satisfied with it, but also sad that there won't be another proper book in the series to look forward to.

The release date just so happened to be the same as my 25th birthday party, so we did the dinner and hanging out thing, then proceeded to go to Wal-mart around 11:30 and wait for midnight. I was a bit surprised that my friends were all willing to go with me and that none of them chose to wait at my apartment or just go ahead to their homes since it was getting late, but I was happy they chose to accompany me. Dawn (my best friend) came down from Atlanta with her boyfriend, Steve, who I liked a great deal. They seem to complement each other well, and I suspect that they'll wind up married.

Nothing new on the job front. I had an interview for a teaching position last week, but they're looking for someone with experience. Keep your fingers crossed for me though!

My dentist experience [Jun. 29th, 2007|11:37 am]
[mood | bouncy]

I had one of my wisdom teeth pulled two Mondays ago. I went into the dentist for a new patient evaluation, and upon inspecting my teeth, the dentist advised me to have that one removed right away as well as have a filling done. I agreed, thinking that the removal procedure would be relatively harmless and that I wouldn't feel any pain during the procedure or afterwards. It dismays me to inform you that I was wrong on both accounts. I'd never had a tooth pulled before, and I now dread any future dentist visits. It hurt so much while he was pulling it that I started to cry, and then it hurt so much afterwards that I was forced to take off work from Monday to Thursday. I should have stayed home again Friday, but I couldn't afford to, so I went into work anyway. The dentist had told his assistant to prescribe me some painkillers, but I forgot about it and the assistant evidently did as well, so I was not a happy person when I got home. My sister had some pills leftover from when she injured her neck in a car accident, so I took one of those and fell in love. It removed the majority of the severe, overwhelming pain, but it also left me quite drowsy. My dentist called me Monday evening to check up on me and after hearing how much pain I was in, he phoned a prescription in to the drugstore. Luckily it was for the same painkilers my sister had, but an even higher dosage!

I've had back surgery (which actually didn't hurt at all) and a broken leg. I've had a multitude of other injuries, for I am severely accident-prone. Everything else was a piece of cake compared to this wisdom tooth removal. My dentist advised me to have the other bottom tooth pulled (an oral surgeon will have to take care of that one though) and says that my top ones should be fine. I have to go see him again next week for a cleaning and another filling (I'm never waiting 4 years between going to the dentist again, and I'm now an avid proponent of dental floss and all that fun stuff), and I'm totally dreading it.

In happy news, it's now only 21 days until the next/final Harry Potter book comes out, which means it's also only 20 days until my 25th birthday!

Quilting! [Jun. 4th, 2007|09:39 am]
[mood | sick]

I started a quilting class. My first quilt should be finished in about a week, and then maybe I'll post a picture of it. It's only a four week long class, so it's just a baby-blanket size. I'm pleased with it so far, and I think it's going to turn out well. My sister has already finished one and is about half-way finished with her second. She's super speedy, but then again, she has a bit more free time than me. I'm really enjoying quilting; it's fun to be creative and make something that I really like. There's only one other person in the class, and it's so funny because we're so much alike! I think I'll ask her to hang out with us once class ends - I could really use some more girl friends.

Back to work now!

Russian Boy, FOL sale, and HP countdown [Apr. 30th, 2007|09:40 am]
I've been writing more in my real journal and neglecting this one lately. After all, it's easier to be open and honest about things when I know other people won't see it.

I've had this guy friend for the past three years. We've had an odd relationship; when we first met, he liked me but I was dating someone else. After that we were just friends, then we dated a bit, then we stopped talking, then we were friends again, and so on. In the past three years, he's never seriously dated anyone else until this past February. The thing is that right before he started dating this girl, he was texting and calling me on a regular basis, wanting to spend time with me, saying things to me that led me to believe he was seriously interested in me. Then out of nowhere, he disappeared again and I found out through stinking facebook that he was in a relationship! Also thanks to facebook, I now have a suspicion that the last time we hung out, which involved some cuddling and kissing, he was already dating his new girlfriend. Maybe I'll get up the nerve to ask him soon, but it bothers me to think that this person who I liked and really thought was a nice and honest guy, that he might have cheated on his girlfriend!

Things have been going pretty well lately though, minus the aforementioned little annoyance. I went to the Friends of the Library booksale last week and got 14 books for just under $14. My family from North Carolina is visiting this weekend, so I'm taking off work Friday and Monday! There are now only 81 days left until the next/final Harry Potter book comes out, and I cannot wait!!!

Sewing Woes and March Madness [Mar. 20th, 2007|01:03 pm]
Remember that I mentioned a pair of my pajama pants ripped? Luckily it was right along the seam, and I possess just enough sewing talent to fix a problem like that. Unfortunately, I'm a ditz at times, and I forgot to turn them inside out so that the thread line wouldn't be visible. The material is white (with Christmas trees!) and I used a burgundy thread, so it's pretty noticeable! I'm glad it's just pajama pants, and therefore they're only worn around the apt because it'd be a pain to rip all that out and do it over again the proper way (although I may fix them sometime in the future).

This is the first time I've ever been interested in March Madness. For those of you that don't know, that's the name of the NCAA college basketball tournament. It starts out with 64 teams, and then is reduced to 32, then 16, 8, 4, 2, and finally 1. The Gators have made it to the Sweet 16, and it's pretty exciting stuff. Flo and I have watched some of the other schools play as well, and I'd forgotten how much I like basketball. It's so fast-paced and anything can happen in just a few seconds!

Juanita and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day [Mar. 8th, 2007|09:26 am]
[mood | relieved that yesterday's over]

Last night I took my car in to Sears to get the oil changed. I chose Sears primarily because I work all day, and they're the only place I could find that stayed open late, and also because I know two of the mechanics there, one of whom is a fairly nice boy. We arrived there around 5:35, and the man who checked us in said it'd be about an hour and a half wait, so we found things to keep us us busy until 7:15-ish, at which point we went back to check. The next guy told us it'd be 30 more minutes, that they were about to start on our car, so we went back again around 7:45, only to see that the guy we know, Charley, was working. Charley talked to us for a few minutes and informed us that everybody else there was a moron and he was just about to start on our car, telling us to check back in 30 MORE minutes! When we went back around 8:15, the other guy said Charley was still doing our car and to come back in 20 more minutes. So we went back at 8:40, and guess what happened next . . .

There's something wrong with something, I think they said the drain plug had been stripped away, and if it had been put back on the car in that condition, it'd most likely never come off again and then the oil wouldn't be able to be changed! Of course they didn't have the part that it needed, so it wouldn't be ready until the next morning. At this point, we'd been waiting over 3 hours, and neither Flo nor I were very happy, and Flo went slightly postal on them, telling them that they needed to get a better concept of how long it was going to take. The guy's defense was, "Well, since 7:00, it's been a 2 hour wait," and when Flo informed him we'd been there well before 6, the guy became silent. Flo called Natasha, her best friend from high school, who came and gave us a ride back home.

After that, Flo started freaking out because she had to be at the school where she interns at 7:30 this morning. It's way out by Santa Fe, which is about a 30 minute drive from our house. It is accessible by bus, but it would take 2 buses, and they don't start running until 7 AM. The reason she couldn't skip the volunteering is because she had to teach a lesson this morning, and if she failed to teach the lesson and then do the paper about it, she'd fail not one, but two of her classes. See, the pro-teach program here at UF doesn't care if you have transportation or not, they say it's not their problem, and they never match people up to a specific school depending upon transportation needs, it's all random. We finally asked our friend Elizabeth, who we've known for close to 20 years, if I could go stay the night with her and give her a ride to work this morning and then borrow her car (she has to be to work at 6:30 AM), but she said she'd just let us borrow it since her work is only about a 5 minute walk from her house. Crisis averted, thanks to our friends!

So, yeah, yesterday = crappy day. A pair of my pajama pants ripped as well, and there's all this family drama going on that I won't get into, and it just seems like everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

books! [Feb. 28th, 2007|09:46 am]
[mood | slightly tired]

I had a dream last night that a used bookstore opened up in Cedar Key. I just had to go in it, of course, but I didn't have much hope that there'd be many good things in there. However, it was HUGE and overflowing with books, most of which were series I used to like back in middle school and elementary. There were Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, Sleepover Friends, Fear Street and Goosebumps, Girl Talk, and basically every series I could imagine. I've never voluntarily given up a book, and I have all of those series back home, boxed up in my closet. To give you an idea of how many books I have, I have five bookshelves loaded down, other random little tables filled up, and about five boxes in my closet. My plan has been to save those books for my children or for me to read again, and I always think that when I own a house, it will have to have a library. Anyway, my series aren't all complete - most of them come close, but I'm missing out here and there, so I was so excited that through the bookstore in Cedar Key, I'd finally be able to fill in the gaps in my collections. It was such a good dream, one of the best I've ever had.

Buffy!!!! [Feb. 26th, 2007|07:45 pm]

[music |"Almost Always True to You" - Elvis (from Blue Hawaii)]

I just reserved a copy of the first Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book! It comes out March 7th, and it's a continuation of the series, totally canon, and Joss Whedon is overseeing the entire project and writing some of the issues, including the first one. I've read great reviews, and I'm SO excited about this, you have no idea.

happy day-after-national-pancake day [Feb. 21st, 2007|09:40 am]
[mood | not wanting to work!]

First of all, Pooh's bloodwork came back, and most of it is good. Her fats, urine pH, kidney, liver, and thyroid are all in good shape, and the only bad thing is she has an irregular white blood cell count. However, on the positive side, it's the white blood cells that go all wacky when the cat is infected with a parasite/suffering from allergies. I have to get a sample of her poop so they can test it for parasites, and we switched her food (almost $19 for 4 pounds!) and have her on flea medicine since those are the most common allergies. Hopefully the vet figures it out soon because poor Pooh is losing so much fur!

Flo's doing ok. Her neck still hurts, but at least she isn't dead. It's looking like the girl who hit her may not have insurance after all though . . .

We celebrated pancake day by going over to Elizabeth's, where she made very delicious pancakes for all of us and we knitted while watching Nine Months. All is well.

Car Accident [Feb. 16th, 2007|12:32 pm]
[mood | tired]

Slightly updated the last 2 paragraphs to fix some erroneous information.

My sister, Flo, was involved in a wreck Wednesday (yes, Valentine's Day) morning. She was stopped at a red light, and a woman came speeding up behind her without even stepping on her brakes, rear-ending Flo. The lady (I don't know her name, but let's call her Mandy) told the cops that she only looked down for a second and that last time she'd checked, Flo hadn't been in front of her. Riiiight. Flo had been stopped at the light about 15 or so seconds, making it clear that Mandy looked down for much longer than just a second. After she rammed into Flo, she kept on pushing her gas pedal and rammed into the car that had been beside Flo in the next lane. It's Flo's theory that Mandy was trying to escape but failed. The force of Mandy's Ford Excursion (huuuge SUV) hitting our minivan rammed Flo into the SUV in front of her, which then proceeded to slam into the car in front of it, making it a 5 car accident.

Luckily Flo wasn't too injured, although we did wind up spending 7 hours in the Emergency Room that night! Her neck was a little sore after the accident, but it didn't start to really hurt until around midnight. Yep, we didn't get home until after 7 AM. There was only one doctor in the ER, and they wound up doing x-rays on Floey only to see that her neck is sprained/suffering from whiplash. They prescribed her some pain pills and bed rest and told her it should feel better soon. I know her neck hurts and it sucks that this happened to her, but it could have been worse, and I'm so thankful it wasn't. We don't always get along, but she's pretty much my best friend.

Finally, our minivan is destroyed, completely unsalvagable, totalled, and I don't know what will happen next. Mandy's insurance had to pay for a rental car, and Flo reserved the rental for 1.5 weeks. I'm unsure if we'll get to keep it until we're able to get a new car or what though. They have to give you what the totalled car is worth, and that isn't as much as we still owe on it, but when my mom got the van, she also purchased the gap insurance. That's supposed to pay the difference between what the insurance gives you and how much you still owe, as the name implies, but Mom talked to them and they might not do that now, something about blah blah blah, they suck. Nothing like this has ever happened to us though, so I'm unsure how long it will take to be cleared and all. Flo and I were planning on doing a road trip during spring break, and that's slightly less than 4 weeks away. So, yeah, not going to happen.

P.S. I had to take my oldest cat, Pooh, to the vet today and leave her while they did some bloodwork and the vet tries to figure out why she's losing all her fur. I've never personally left her at the vet, and I felt like a mother on the first day of kindergarten or something! Poor Pooh was so scared and I'm so anxious to get her back and make sure she's ok. Updated: They took samples of her fur and think it might be ringworm.

Flotsam, Jetsam, now I've got her voice . . . [Feb. 13th, 2007|09:45 am]
[mood | lazy]

I've decided to try to obtain a job this upcoming year as a high school english teacher. I needed three references, so I asked two old bosses (one I worked for for a year, and the other I worked for on and off for over five years and she has known me since I was a little girl) and my old high school english teacher. Even though the school board said the references should preferably be done by former employers, I was unable to contact anyone from the Briar Patch since it has now closed and my managers all quit a long time before the store closed. I thought Mrs. Rose would be a good choice since she taught me for four years and she knew me long before then since I was friends with her eldest daughter, Sarah. I'm just waiting to receive one of the references back (had to mail it since she didn't have a fax machine) and then I will turn in the application. I'll have to take a test, but the test isn't held until April.

My uncle left his wife. They've been married about 15 years and they were friends before they started dating. They both have major problems with alcohol and they aren't very good for each other. We'll see if he's able to stop drinking now that he's away from her.

This past weekend I went crazy and saw three movies in the theater! My sister's been dying to see Freedom Writers, so we did that Saturday, and I've wanted to see Because I Said So, so we went on Sunday. Then Sunday evening I was just hanging around the apartment when a friend text messaged me and invited me to go see Blood Diamond with him. I imdb'ed it to read the synopsis since I'd never heard of it, and I agreed to go with him, partially because it sounded good and I didn't have anything else to do, partially because I don't hang out with him often enough. They were all good movies (I like almost every one I see though, and maybe Because I Said So was more cute than good). I did a lot of other things this past weekend - potluck/game night Friday, lunch/movie and then dinner out with some friends Saturday, and so on. Passed by too quickly.

Harry Potter release date! [Feb. 1st, 2007|09:57 am]

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (aka the 7th, the last, the FINAL HP book ever) has an official release date . . . July 21st!!! That is less than 6 months away, and it's only 2 days after my birthday!!! YAY, I'm sooooo excited that I'll finally get to find out the ending and answer all my questions. It's also really sad though since I've been reading this series for the past 6 years and I really love them.
